Introduction: Gestational diabetes is one of the important problems during pregnancy that can cause complications for the mother and fetus. In recent years, along with the increase in the prevalence of obesity in Iran and the world, we have witnessed an increase in the incidence of gestational diabetes. The incidence of gestational diabetes imposes high costs not only in the short term but also in the long term for the individual, the newborn, and the health system. Despite extensive efforts to prevent and treat this disease, a gap remains. Materials and Methods: This policy brief aims to guide policymakers in developing a comprehensive and multi-sectoral policy for the prevention and management of gestational diabetes. Results: Gestational diabetes is preventable, detectable, and manageable. It is recommended that, by developing a screening program for gestational diabetes appropriate to local data, targeting the high-risk population predicted by risk assessment models, establishing a reporting and registration system for mothers with gestational diabetes for better planning, and using electronic devices and cyberspace to educate and increase awareness of mothers and their families, important steps can be taken to prevent and reduce the burden of the disease on the individual and the health system. Conclusion: A coordinated policy approach that includes prevention, early diagnosis, standard treatment, and postnatal follow-up can significantly reduce maternal and neonatal morbidity. |
