Abstract:   (49 Views)
Introduction: This study aimed to investigate the pattern of calcium (Ca) consumption and the contribution of different food sources to dietary Ca intake in Tehrani adults. Materials and Methods: This study enrolled 4,384 male and female adults participating in the third, fourth, or fifth phases of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) and followed them up until the seventh phase. Dietary intake was assessed using a reliable and valid semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. The trend of total dietary Ca intake during the follow-up period (2006–2008 to 2018–2022) was analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: The mean±standard deviation age and body mass index of participants at baseline were 40.8±12.8 years and 27.5±4.9 kg/m², respectively, with 41.9% being male. The mean±standard deviation total Ca intake decreased from 1308±568 to 1213±530 mg/day in men and from 1318±579 to 1140±491 mg/day in women (P=0.001). Additionally, the percentage of Ca intake from plant-based foods increased (from 39.8% to 54.8%; P=0.016), while Ca intake from non-dairy animal sources (from 31.2% to 25.2%; P=0.043) and dairy products (from 51.7% to 36.6%; P=0.001) decreased. Conclusion: Over the 16-year study period, total Ca intake, as well as Ca intake from dairy and non-dairy animal sources, decreased, while dietary Ca from plant-based foods increased.
