Introduction: Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases. Diabetes self-management is considered the most important element of diabetes control. Therefore, identifying factors that affect diabetes self-management is important. Psychological variables are included among the most important of these factors. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the relationship between the family’s emotional environment and diabetes self-management, with cognitive emotion regulation strategies as a mediating factor, in people with diabetes. Materials and Methods: The present study was a descriptive-correlational, purposive sampling study that included 200 patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes attending health centers in Tehran Province in 2024-2025. The data were collected using the Family Environment Questionnaire (BFRS), the Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (DSMQ), and the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ). Data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation and path analysis. Results: A significant positive relationship was observed between the family emotional environment and diabetes self-management (r=0.557, p<0.001). A significant positive relationship was observed between the emotional environment and adaptive strategies (r=0.484, p<0.001), and a significant negative relationship with maladaptive strategies (r=-0.317, p<0.001). A significant positive relationnship was observed between adaptive strategies and diabetes self-management (r=0.582, p<0.001) and a significant negative relationship between maladaptive strategies and self-management (r=-0.438, p<0.001). Emotion regulation strategies played a partial mediating role in the relationship between family emotional environment and diabetes self-management (p<0.001). Conclusion: Emotion regulation strategies and family emotional environment can be considered to improve diabetes self-management and reduce related complications. |
