The Effect of Eight Weeks of Resistance and Endurance Training on Serum Levels of Muscle Atrophy Markers MuRF-1 and Atrogin-1 in Women with Type 2 Diabetes

Introduction: Exercise training plays a significant role in inhibiting muscle atrophy in individuals with type 2 diabetes by modulating cellular signaling pathways and reducing the markers MuRF-1 and Atrogin-1. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of resistance and endurance training on serum levels of MuRF-1 and Atrogin in women with type 2 diabetes. Materials and Methods:This semi-experimental study included 46 women with type 2 diabetes, who were randomly assigned to three groups: resistance training (RT), endurance training (ET), and control (CO). The RT group performed resistance exercises three times per week for 8 weeks, beginning at 40% of one-repetition maximum (1RM) in the first week and progressing to 75% 1RM. The ET group performed aerobic training starting at 40% of their maximum heart rate (HRmax) and increasing to 70% HRmax by week eight. Blood samples were collected after 12 hours of fasting, both before and after the intervention. Serum levels were measured using ELISA. Results: Serum MuRF-1 and Atrogin-1 levels significantly decreased in the RT group compared to the control (P<0.001). Atrogin-1 levels in the RT group were also significantly lower than in the ET group (P=0.008). However, no significant difference in MuRF-1 was observed between ET and CO groups. Conclusion:The present study is among the few that have examined serum levels of MuRF-1 and Atrogin-1. The results suggest that resistance training, by reducing these serum markers, may offer a viable strategy for mitigating muscle atrophy in patients with type 2 diabetes.
